PlateScribe ("PlateScribe," "we," "us," or "our") is operated by Benjamin D Chan, a sole proprietor.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, disclose, and protect information when you use the PlateScribe mobile application, our website at https://platescribe.com, and related services (collectively, the "Services").

We respect your privacy and aim to collect only information reasonably necessary to provide and maintain our Services.

By using PlateScribe, you acknowledge the data practices described in this Privacy Policy. Where we request your consent for a particular activity, such as AI processing of meal photographs, that activity is subject to your affirmative consent.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

When you register for PlateScribe, we collect and process:

• Your email address.
• Authentication credentials, which are processed through our authentication provider.
• A unique account identifier.
• Information necessary to verify and maintain your account.

We use Supabase Auth to manage account authentication. We do not need access to your plaintext password to provide the Services.

1.2 Meal Photographs and Nutrition Information

When you use PlateScribe's meal-tracking features, we process information such as:

• Photographs you select or capture.
• Meal-source information you provide.
• Estimated calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat.
• Corrections or adjustments you make to nutritional estimates.
• Saved meal records and related dates or timestamps.

Photographs selected or captured by users may initially contain embedded metadata, including capture time, device information, and location data. Before uploading saved meal photographs to Supabase Storage, PlateScribe re-encodes the images to remove embedded EXIF metadata, including available GPS, camera, and capture-time information. We do not require location metadata to provide nutritional analysis.

Meal photographs and nutritional information are used to provide the functionality you request, including meal analysis, saving meals, and displaying your nutrition history.

1.3 Nutrition Goals and App Preferences

PlateScribe may store the following information locally on your device:

• Daily calorie goals.
• Protein, carbohydrate, and fat goals.
• Free-analysis usage counters.
• AI processing consent preferences.
• Other settings necessary for app functionality.

Some of these values are associated with your unique account identifier so that information from different accounts on the same device remains separate.

1.4 Subscription Information

When you purchase or restore a subscription, we and our subscription service provider may process:

• Subscription status.
• Product identifiers.
• Purchase and renewal history.
• Transaction identifiers and receipt-related information.
• Your PlateScribe account identifier.
• Limited device or technical information needed for subscription management.

Purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store.

PlateScribe does not directly collect or store your complete payment card number or payment card security code.

1.5 Technical and Usage Information

When you use the Services, we and our service providers may process limited technical information, including:

• Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.
• Device and operating system information.
• Application requests and timestamps.
• Authentication and security information.
• Error, diagnostic, and server log information.
• Information necessary to detect abuse, troubleshoot failures, and maintain service availability.

The information collected depends on the services and infrastructure involved.

1.6 Information You Provide When Contacting Us

If you contact us for support, we may collect your email address, the contents of your message, and any information you voluntarily provide so that we can respond.

Please avoid sending passwords, payment card information, or other unnecessary sensitive information in support messages.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use information to:

1. Create, authenticate, and maintain user accounts.
2. Analyze meal photographs and generate nutritional estimates.
3. Save and display meal history.
4. Maintain calorie and macronutrient goals.
5. Provide subscription access and verify entitlements.
6. Respond to support inquiries.
7. Troubleshoot errors and improve reliability.
8. Protect the Services against unauthorized access, fraud, and misuse.
9. Comply with applicable legal obligations.
10. Process account deletion and other privacy requests.

We do not sell your personal information to advertisers.

PlateScribe does not operate an advertising network or use your meal photographs to target advertisements.

3. Artificial Intelligence and Meal Photograph Processing

PlateScribe uses artificial intelligence to estimate nutritional information from meal photographs.

3.1 How AI Processing Works

When you request meal analysis:

1. You select or capture a photograph.
2. PlateScribe sends the photograph and relevant meal-source information to our backend.
3. Our backend processes the photograph and submits the information needed for analysis to OpenAI's API.
4. OpenAI processes the request and returns information used to generate nutritional estimates.
5. PlateScribe displays the estimates for your review.

The photograph submitted for AI analysis is processed by our backend, which re-encodes the image before sending it to OpenAI. This processing is separate from the image-storage process. When you choose to save a meal, PlateScribe separately removes embedded EXIF metadata from the photograph before uploading it to Supabase Storage. These two processes are designed to prevent unnecessary image metadata from being shared with either provider.

We do not intentionally include your email address or PlateScribe account identifier in the meal-analysis content submitted to OpenAI.

3.2 Consent to AI Processing

Before your first AI meal analysis, PlateScribe presents a disclosure explaining that OpenAI will process your photograph and meal-source information.

You may choose Continue to consent or Not Now to decline.

If you decline, the photograph will not be submitted for AI analysis through that request.

Your choice is remembered locally for your account, so the disclosure does not ordinarily appear before every analysis.

You may contact us if you have questions about this processing. You can stop further AI processing by not submitting additional photographs for analysis.

3.3 OpenAI Data Handling

OpenAI acts as a third-party technology provider for meal analysis.

Information submitted to OpenAI is subject to its applicable API data-handling practices, including security, abuse monitoring, and retention controls.

Under OpenAI's published API policies, API data is not used to train its models by default unless the customer has opted in, subject to applicable terms and exceptions.

OpenAI may retain certain request information for abuse monitoring or other permitted purposes under its policies. Deleting information from PlateScribe does not necessarily cause immediate deletion of information independently retained by OpenAI.

3.4 Limitations of AI Analysis

AI-generated nutritional estimates may be inaccurate or incomplete.

Photographs alone cannot reliably establish every ingredient, portion size, cooking method, or nutritional characteristic of a meal.

PlateScribe is not intended to diagnose, treat, prevent, or manage medical conditions. Its estimates should not be relied upon to determine whether food contains allergens or is safe to consume.

4. Service Providers and Third-Party Disclosures

We use third-party providers to operate PlateScribe. We disclose information to them only as reasonably necessary for the relevant functionality.

Supabase

Supabase provides authentication, database, and file-storage infrastructure.

It may process account identifiers, email addresses, authentication information, saved meal records, and stored photographs.

OpenAI

OpenAI processes selected meal photographs and meal-source information to generate AI-assisted nutritional estimates.

RevenueCat

RevenueCat manages subscription status, purchases, and premium entitlements. It may process anonymous customer identifiers, PlateScribe account identifiers, subscription and transaction information, customer activity timestamps, and limited technical information. RevenueCat may create customer records even for users who have not purchased a subscription. These records may remain in RevenueCat after the associated PlateScribe account is deleted.

Apple

Apple processes App Store purchases, subscriptions, and related transactions under its own terms and privacy practices.

Render

Render hosts PlateScribe's backend infrastructure and may process requests, technical information, and server logs necessary to operate the backend.

Resend

Resend provides email delivery services for PlateScribe, including account-related emails such as authentication and verification messages. To deliver these emails, Resend may process recipient email addresses, message contents, and related delivery information.

These providers may process information in accordance with their respective agreements, policies, and legal obligations.

We may also disclose information if required by law, necessary to protect the security or integrity of our Services, or reasonably necessary to respond to legal proceedings.

We do not sell meal photographs or nutrition records to data brokers.

5. Storage and Security

PlateScribe uses Supabase to store account information, saved meal records, and saved meal photographs.

Saved meal photographs are stored in a private Storage bucket. Access controls are designed to restrict users to information associated with their own accounts. Before photographs are uploaded for storage, PlateScribe removes embedded EXIF metadata to reduce unnecessary collection of device, location, and capture information.

We use authentication, access restrictions, and secure network communications to help protect information.

However, no system of electronic storage or transmission can be guaranteed completely secure.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and promptly contacting us if you suspect unauthorized account access.

6. Data Retention

We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Services, maintain accounts, fulfill legitimate operational needs, resolve disputes, and comply with applicable legal obligations.

Account and Saved Meal Data

Account information and saved meal records are ordinarily retained while your account remains active.

Saved photographs are ordinarily retained until the associated account data is deleted, subject to technical limitations and applicable retention requirements.

Locally Stored Information

Nutrition goals, free-analysis counters, and certain preferences are stored locally on your device.

Following successful account deletion, PlateScribe is designed to remove the deleted account's associated local information from that device.

AI Processing Data

Meal-analysis requests may be retained temporarily by OpenAI in accordance with its applicable API retention and security policies.

Subscription Records

Apple and RevenueCat may retain purchase, subscription, and transaction records independently of PlateScribe's account database, including for billing, accounting, fraud prevention, support, or legal compliance. RevenueCat may also retain anonymous or account-linked customer identifiers and activity records for users who have not purchased a subscription. Deleting a PlateScribe account does not automatically delete these RevenueCat records. You may contact us at platescribe@gmail.com to request assistance with deletion of associated RevenueCat customer information, subject to applicable legal and operational retention requirements.

Backups and Logs

Information may remain temporarily in provider-managed backups, system logs, or records that must be retained for legitimate operational or legal purposes.

Deletion from active PlateScribe systems does not guarantee immediate erasure from all backups or independent third-party systems.

7. Account Deletion

You can request deletion of your PlateScribe account through the app's Profile/Settings section using Delete Account.

When account deletion is successfully completed, PlateScribe is designed to:

• Delete your saved meal photographs from its active Storage system.
• Delete your saved meal records from its active database.
• Delete your PlateScribe authentication account.
• Clear associated local account preferences from the device completing the deletion.

If a required server-side deletion step fails, the process may return an error rather than confirming successful deletion.

Deleting your PlateScribe account does not cancel an active Apple subscription.

You must manage or cancel your subscription separately through your Apple Account to avoid future renewal charges.

Account deletion does not automatically remove information independently maintained by Apple, RevenueCat, OpenAI, or other providers under their own retention policies.

8. Your Privacy Choices and Rights

Depending on where you live and applicable law, you may have rights to:

• Request access to personal information we maintain about you.
• Request correction of inaccurate information.
• Request deletion of personal information.
• Obtain information about how your data is processed.
• Object to or restrict certain processing.
• Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
• Request a portable copy of certain information, where applicable.

We may need to verify your identity before responding to certain requests.

Some information may be retained where permitted or required by applicable law.

We will respond to applicable privacy requests within the time required by law.

9. Children's Privacy

PlateScribe is not directed to children under 13.

We do not knowingly solicit personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without appropriate authorization, we will take steps to address the information in accordance with applicable law.

10. International Data Processing

PlateScribe operates from the United States and uses third-party infrastructure providers.

Information may be processed or stored in the United States or other locations where our providers operate.

Privacy laws and data-protection practices may differ between jurisdictions.

Where required, we will take appropriate steps to comply with applicable international data-protection requirements.

11. Third-Party Services and Links

PlateScribe may link to external websites or services, including Apple's subscription management pages and the websites of our service providers.

We are not responsible for the independent privacy practices of those third parties.

We encourage you to review their applicable policies.

12. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in our Services, technologies, legal requirements, or information-handling practices.

When we update it, we will revise the Last Updated date.

If a change materially affects your rights or the processing of your information, we will provide additional notice or obtain consent where required by law.

Your continued use of the Services after an update is subject to applicable law and does not replace consent where affirmative consent is required.
